At Belmont Roofing, we’re proud to have built a reputation of doing quality work on each and every roof. We have really really high standards, and making sure each job is done right is a major point of emphasis for us. It’s what’s allowed us to be a trusted contractor for homeowners in Lincoln for more than 30 years, and what has enabled us to grow into the Omaha and Grand Island areas as well.
We often are asked about our crews. For the last 12 years, we’ve participated in the H-2B Visa Program to hire the men who work on your roof. Each employee is thoroughly vetted before being admitted into the US, and works for the season before returning to Mexico in the months that we are unable to roof homes in our Nebraska climate. These men are trained well (from returning to work with us year after year!), hardworking, good neighbors to our community, and 100% legal. They pay taxes, shop locally, and perform really hard work that no year-round Nebraskans are applying to do.
This year, due to congressional inaction that you can read more about below, our crews are not able to join us. This means that our work in 2017 will be performed by hired subcontractors.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?
In effect, nothing. When you contract with Belmont Roofing, regardless of who does the labor itself, you can expect quality work backed by our five-year workmanship warranty. We aren’t going anywhere, and if, for whatever reason, something isn’t done correctly the first time, we’ll be here to take care of it.
We’re putting in extra failsafe measures this year, too, to help us make sure we do the best job possible for you. Our logistics team (Zach and Tricia in Lincoln, and Todd in Omaha) will be working with you to coordinate the day your roof is scheduled for work. When the day of your work arrives, our team of highly-trained operations managers (Adam, Francisco, Matt, and Vidal in Lincoln, and Jake in Omaha) as well as our safety director, Tommy, will routinely stop by the job site throughout the day. We have also put together training videos for the subcontractors to help demonstrate how Belmont Roofing operates and expects jobs to be completed. And a final quality assurance inspection (by the roofing specialists in Lincoln, and Jake in Omaha) will ensure that the job has been completed to our standards.
So why make a point of mentioning it, you might ask?
Put simply: integrity. As a company, we believe in doing the right thing, even when no one is watching, or when no one would know the difference. We know our reputation, and one of the reasons some homeowners call us over other companies is that we do perform work with our own Belmont Roofing employees. So when that will not be the case, we don’t want to hide it. We know our customers are used to seeing our signature trucks and trailers in front of their houses, and when that doesn’t happen this year, we want you to know why — because we want to be a contractor you can trust to tell you the truth, even when it’s not to our benefit.
Again, this doesn’t change anything in terms of what you should expect in the quality of the roof or the warranty behind it — it just might not be the friendly faces in the familiar trucks you’re used to seeing. We just wanted to let you know what was going on.
SO HOW CAN YOU HELP US?
Glad you asked! Below, you can click through the links to learn more about what happened in Congress that led to us not being able to have our employees return to us this year. There are a lot of hot takes with regard to immigration, and a lot of conversations to be had there — but unfortunately, the H-2B Visa Program is often lumped in to this area, and it’s really a separate issue entirely. Understanding it better is the first step to finding a solution.
Once you know what’s going on, take action to help us by contacting your representatives (their contact information is listed at the bottom of the page) and encouraging them to support a returning worker exemption to the H-2B Visa Program. This simple solution actually helps grow our local economy, supporting local American jobs, and providing us with a dependable workforce so that we can get back to taking care of your roofs with our Belmont Roofing staff.
You might have caught one of our commercials on the radio or TV last summer that we really think sums up the whole thing: whether they’re year-round or seasonal, we are who we are because of who we’ve had beside us for these many years.
We’re so glad you’re interested in learning more about the H-2B Visa Program. This program allows US employers to hire temporary, non-agricultural workers who meet specific regulatory requirements. Among these requirements are the caveat that all reasonable efforts must be made to hire Americans first, and when the positions are still left unfilled, only then can H-2B Visas be issued to fill those jobs. Please understand that these positions in no way take away from American opportunity — in fact, they create more jobs for our fellow citizens!
- This overview from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security gives some basic background on the program.
- The H-2B Workforce Coalition also gives lots of great information, including these myths vs. facts about the program.
- Belmont Roofing is just one of thousands of companies from all sorts of industries who utilize the H-2B Visa Program. While increasing uncertainty regarding numbers permitted makes it difficult to plan, it’s still a worthwhile program for many reasons.
- Previously, workers who had been part of the program in the three years prior to the filing year were exempted from the 66,000 cap of H-2B visas granted, which allowed companies to return their workforce with better reliability.
- However, that returning worker exemption expired in September 2016, and in December, Congress failed to renew the policy, placing an exceptional strain on the cap as companies scrambled to apply for the extremely limited number of visas.
- Due to this inaction, Belmont Roofing is one of thousands of companies who were shut out of applying for the visas we need to bring our workers back in 2017.
- Since the program is so essential to small business (with an estimated 4.64 permanent jobs created for each H-2B Visa Program worker), our hope is now that the U.S. Congress, as encouraged by these representatives, will pass legislation to re-enact the returning workers exemption on a permanent basis.
